Last season, the issue of the 'starting 22' made it so that Aston Villa would often see players who would otherwise be deserving to be on the pitch left out. Now, however, there is significantly less depth. During the preseason it appeared that Donyell Malen would see an increased role for Villa this campaign.
To this point, though, the Dutchman has not seen an uptick in minutes. It is, granted, only two matches into the season, but the fact that the attack has not looked good, and when also considering the lack of options compared to the past season, it is concerning for many Villa fans who would like to see Malen start.
While speaking with Birmingham Live's John Townley, Unai Emery discussed the situation and touched on Malen specifically and the lack of playing time for the Netherlands international.
Direct comments from Aston Villa boss
The Villa boss' comments spoke on the nature of how little action Malen is getting compared to what he would be otherwise deserving of. Emery explained:
"Sometimes I am not being fair with some players... Especially Malen... I am happy with him, and he can play in the starting XI. He can also play in various roles, as a right winger or a striker."
Managers certainly do not have to be this open about players' playing time. Oftentimes the one in charge will assume the role of being right simply by nature of having the position. By the same token. Being too honest could potentially give the opposition an insight to be used against a team later.
In the case of Malen, though, this is not exactly a concern. Instead, this was a candid moment from Emery in which he opened up about why Malen is not playing during matches. Perhaps this admission will lead to Malen seeing a greater run of play. Especially if Villa continue to not look good in front of goal, he could very easily be one of the options to solve the current issue for Emery's side.
