Throughout the summer, it was believed that Manchester United would not make an earnest push for Aston Villa's Emiliano Martínez. The reports indicated that the club wanted to stick with André Onana, and the thought of bringing in an additional starting-caliber option was understandably viewed as too much for one dressing room.
Since then, however, the Cameroon international has been injured, and when he has played, in the limited action so far, things have looked far more worrying than what they should be for a starting keeper in the Premier League.
The latest report from Fabrizio Romano makes all the sense in the world from United's perspective. Romano has disclosed that Ruben Amorim's side is attempting to see a last-moment agreement through for 'Dibu.' To this point, the journalist mentioned that talks have started between all parties, but there is nothing concrete in place.
It appeared as if any and all discussions involving Martínez's alleged departure from B6 had ended. Instead, circumstances at United seem to have rekindled the prior interest.
This will come down to two important aspects now. Martínez will, of course, need to want to leave the claret and blue and join a situation that is completely questionable at best. Villa, too, would be willing to part ways with the world's number one, but they would want to receive a significant fee for that to transpire.
Remaining at Aston Villa
At this point it is unknown if there will be enough cooperation among all moving parts in order for an agreement to be reached. The desperation of the transfer period closing could, however, end up leading to something coming to fruition.
Until something tangible actually comes to be, Martínez is still Villa's number one. The thought of his leaving, particularly for United, is a complete oddity to even consider.
