It goes without saying that for most players the aim is to play in Champions League. As Aston Villa experienced last season, however, that is often a more difficult task than what it may initially seem.
When it comes to transfers, however, it is something that tends to go unquestioned during conversations. According to many, a certain player will only ever entertain the idea of joining a side if they are also given the chance to play in Europe's top competition.
Hearing that opening anthem and playing against the best in Europe is significant, and it is a massive club stage. There should be some emphasis placed on being in CL.
Notice, though, that the club that sees its name the most in regard to potential new signings, Manchester United, isn't in any tournament whatsoever this year.
Yet, United still managed to secure a number of their signings that the supporters will hope prove to be the difference. Not a single mention of Champions League or anything else even entered into the equation.
What this should show is that although CL is an important factor, it is not the ultimate determining factor. Players will leave or join a club for varying reasons. For those that do have Champions League as the main motivation, there should be something of a warning.
Far from determining aspect for Aston VIlla
Making it and qualifying for the top competition is a difficult feat. Even the best clubs will have down years and find themselves looking on the outside after a campaign.
Instead, it is far more important to ensure that the right fit is in place between the player and club. This, above solely focusing on Champions League will better ensure that a move works out. Placing some emphasis on Europe will always be a part of the picture. It is not the end-all be-all.
