Since arriving at Aston Villa from Leicester on a free transfer, Tielemans has worked his way into becoming a pivotal cog of the Villa midfield. Whether in a holding position or a more attacking role, the Belgium international has a knack for dictating the pace of play and can unlock the defense with his clever passing range.

Now, Tieleman’s talent has been recognized by his national team, as Belgium named the Villa midfielder as its captain earlier in the week.

Against Lichtenstein yesterday, Tielemans wasted no time in seizing his newfound role with the squad, scoring two goals in the team’s 6-0 victory during World Cup qualification. Tieleman’s first goal, however, was a sensational volley that will find its way onto highlight reels for years to come. After that, Tielemans calmly deposited a penalty kick into the bottom left corner of the Liechtenstein net.

After officially receiving the captain’s armband for Belgium, Tielemans spoke about what the honor means to him.

"There are few things more beautiful in a career than this,” Tielemans said. “There were five names and I'm the chosen one. It wouldn't have made any difference to me. I'll always be the same. I'm proud, that's for sure, but it won't change my personality."

Tielemans was tabbed for the captaincy over other experienced, talented players such as Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, so this move speaks to the crucial role he will play moving forward during Belgium’s World Cup journey.

So far, Tielemans has generated five EPL goals and dished out 13 assists while playing in the West Midlands, and he looks poised to have another productive season in Birmingham this year.

On the international stage, Tielemans and his Belgium compatriots will face Kazakhstan next as the team hopes to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
