Carney Chukwuemeka could make a surprising return to Aston Villa, with his former club showing strong interest in bringing him back from Chelsea. The 21-year-old England youth international, who left Villa Park for £20 million in 2022, has found playing time hard to come by at Stamford Bridge, sparking discussions about a potential January move.

Chelsea open to offers

The London club has placed a £40 million price tag on Chukwuemeka, though both Aston Villa and West Ham United consider this valuation excessive. The midfielder's stint at Chelsea has been marked by setbacks, managing only five appearances this season, with four coming in the Europa Conference League. His sole start resulted in a 67th-minute substitution against FC Astana.

Throughout his time at Chelsea, Chukwuemeka has played 32 matches across all competitions, finding the net twice and providing one assist. Manager Enzo Maresca has yet to include him in any Premier League matchday squads this season, highlighting his peripheral role at the club.

Knee problems have significantly impacted his progress, causing him to miss 26 games last season. Despite having a contract until June 2028, the mix of injury troubles and scarce playing opportunities might push him towards the exit door.

Aston Villa appears keen on bringing back their former academy star, with GiveMeSport reporting that the club is very interested in re-signing Chukwuemeka. Aston Villa's connection with Chukwuemeka runs deep, dating back to 2016 when he joined from Northampton Town. After signing his first professional contract in 2020, he made 16 first-team appearances before his Chelsea move. Former player Paul Merson had previously identified him as a promising midfield talent.

Villa's current standing makes them an attractive option for the young midfielder. Under Unai Emery's guidance, they hold eighth place in the Premier League while advancing in the Champions League.

The club's management believes Chukwuemeka's ball-handling skills and midfield adaptability could strengthen their squad depth across multiple competitions.

Competition from West Ham

West Ham United have also expressed interest in securing Chukwuemeka's services, as they look to enhance their midfield options. The Hammers are also monitoring Leicester City's Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall but share Villa's reluctance to meet Chelsea's current asking price. Standing at 6 ft 2 inches, Chukwuemeka's potential remains evident despite his recent challenges.

Villa's transfer plans extend beyond their former academy graduate. The club has shown interest in Paris Saint-Germain's Randal Kolo Muani, Borussia Dortmund's Donyell Malen, and Celta Vigo's Oscar Mingueza. Any potential homecoming for Chukwuemeka will likely depend on Chelsea's flexibility regarding their valuation.
