Tottenham vs Aston Villa match preview
Can Aston Villa claim a first victory of the WSL season at the fourth time of asking? So far, from admittedly tough fixtures, Natalia Arroyo's team have just two points on the board. Last weekend, Lynn Wilms spectacularly scored directly from a corner just four minutes from time, a goal that saw the Villans snatch a point against Brighton at the Amex.
Before this, the Claret and Blue Army also battled to a 1-1 draw with serial champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on the opening weekend. However, in-between, they were steamrollered 4-1 by current champions Manchester City at Villa Park, underlining the gap that exists between them and the league's best.
On Wednesday night, the Villans did claim a morale-boosting 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in the League Cup; Maya Hijikata and Chasity Grant the scorers at the City Ground. Now though, can Aston Villa climb up the WSL table?
Well, that will not be easy, because Tottenham Hotspur have been very impressive to start the season. Last time out, Spurs enjoyed their biggest-ever top flight win, demolishing Crystal Palace 7-0, with Olivia Holdt bagging a hat-trick at Selhurst.
Overall, Martin Ho's side are still unbeaten this season, also enjoying a home win over West Ham, before a 1-1 draw with Liverpool up at St Helens Stadium. There was plenty of hype around Tottenham before the season started, and they have so far justified it. After this though, Spurs' next three games are against London City Lionesses, Chelsea and Arsenal, which will really test their credentials. Before any of that, Spurs are likely to be too strong for Aston Villa.
Tottenham Hotspur team news
Martin Ho made wholesale changes for Wednesday's League Cup tie with West Ham, which finished goalless, with only Amanda Nildén and Olivia Holdt the only players to start both. Thus, considering they were 7-0 winners last weekend, Ho will likely largely revert back to that XI.
Aston Villa team news
Natalia Arroyo made six changes to her lineup in the WSL Players Cup, goalkeeper Akane ÅŒkuma as well as Anna Patten, Noelle Maritz and Lucia Kendall and Lily Murphy the only players to keep their places. It'll be interesting to see if any squad players impressed at the City Ground to keep their places for this one.
