It needs to first be stated that there is too much positive going on at Aston Villa for Ollie Watkins to seriously consider joining Manchester United. Ruben Amorim is still completely unproven in the Premier League, and the club is not playing in any European competition next season.
Not to worry there, however, even with the issue of PSR resolved, the rumor mill is insisting that a Watkins move from Villa is imminent. The outlets have more or less used the same playbook as what they did during the height of the Emiliano Martínez transfer rumor saga.
That is to say, approximately as much as was seen that came of 'Dibu's' departure should be expected in this scenario as well.
To an extent it is something of a compliment for the Villa players to constantly be desired by clubs all the time. As things stand now, it would not make any sense, particularly with the financial aspects taken care of for the time being, to no longer play into the equation.
As with any forward, there are those who will complain about Watkins and lament any and all missed opportunities. It is incredibly difficult to even be in a position to score in the EPL, let alone then have the composure to put one in the back of the net. In this area, there are few who do as well as Watkins.
Move would work against immediate Aston Villa interests
When doing a thought experiment, if United were to replace Rasmus Højlund with Watkins, Amorim's side would instantly get a needed boost and be a markedly improved squad. Villa have a player of that caliber, and in his prime at 29, it does not make any sense to entertain any further.
More importantly, Watkins has found his place at Villa. There's a lot to be said for being able to see off the end product that he has played such an instrumental part in. The realistic chances of his going to United are slim to none.
