History can be there to learn from. Currently an Aston Villa player who is set to return to his parent club, Marcus Rashford will have something of a choice.
The England international will not step foot on the pitch for Manchester United again. Rashford could go to another league entirely or make a move to a different club within the Premier League.
Regardless of what happens, his former teammate, Jesse Lingard, could offer a form of guidance from his past experiences. Lingard enjoyed a loan spell at West Ham. Then in charge of the Hammers, David Moyes expressed his strong desire to keep the midfielder in London.
Similar to how the current situation is playing out for Rashford, Lingard had seen a revival while out on loan. Unfortunately, to his detriment, what happened next was an agreed-to deal with Nottingham Forest, and Lingard is now out of the league.
It's unknown if the former Manchester man would do things differently and accept the offer to stick with West Ham. Looking back now, it certainly looks like remaining a Hammer would have been the better move for Lingard.
Rashford faces a similar crossroads right now. Villa appears interested in keeping the attacker. It will require, however, for the English player to lower his current wage demands. There also seems to be heavy interest from a number of clubs, including the possibility of joining Hansi Flick in Barcelona.
Anything comes with a risk. Rashford staying at Villa comes with an enhanced level of certainty. He has looked his best under Unai Emery, and his contributions have been valued since arriving in B6. In what will likely remain a rotating cast and starting XI, the attacker has shown the ability to be comfortable not playing exclusively as a starter and still making an impact, regardless of which position or how the Villa gaffer allocates his minutes.
International call-up could be factor in staying at Aston Villa
The main reason for his staying could be the fact that he is currently a comfortable England international inclusion. It has been under Emery that Rashford is now a member of the Three Lions again.
Granted, that may have still been the case with Thomas Tuchel taking over anyway. Still, how Rashford has played under Emery has undeniably helped his cause in that regard.
It could be a difficult choice for Rashford, and he'll make the choice he views as best for his career. Before being willing to necessarily move on, looking at what he's done and how well he's played at Villa should play a major factor in the player's decision, particularly if the club qualifies for Champions League.
