In order to play at the top levels, often a player has to be a specialist. In the case of Ezri Konsa, the Aston Villa defender is one of the increasingly rare types who can do it all. While at Villa, Konsa has established himself as a top defender in the Premier League.
When looking at the type of year he is coming off and how the England side looked with and without him, there is becoming a clearer case to make of his being one of the best center-backs in all of Europe.
A statement like that may be too premature at this point. It is becoming more and more relevant to include him in such conversations.
Konsa adds an element of stability and sharpness from the backline. Then add his ability to ward off opposing attackers and the way in which he usually is able to prevent an attack from materializing into anything dangerous; there is a tremendous amount of skill to appreciate.
For Emery to have someone as reliable and capable in front of Emiliano Martínez, who is able to take on challenges head-on, is a great asset for the side.
Only 27, Konsa is now entering the prime of his career. Clubs often search and scout for players with the England international's build and skill set. He just so happens to play for Villa and is under contract until 2028.
Being dismissive of Aston Villa CB cannot continue
Perhaps the inherent and built-in bias against Villa is preventing Konsa from being recognized and credited for the level of player that he is. In any event, continued England fixtures and a good upcoming campaign will make it more difficult for people to overlook what the defender is doing.
For someone who plays the game the right way, Konsa's status in the sport will be forced to match his play on the pitch soon enough.
