The senior England side debut for Aston Villa Women midfielder Missy Bo Kearns shows a lot about her talent. This is a deep Lionesses' squad. Clips were shared on social media of the Villan during training with Sarina Wiegman's side. While Kearns was not able to see the pitch during Friday's 6-0 win over Portugal, her time, similarly to how it did at AVWFC, will come.
It was an impressive display from England. In a midfield that has someone like Georgia Stanway and Fran Kirby coming off the bench, this corps is flooded with talent. Kearns will earn her way into the rotation, and certainly if Wiegman needs to turn to someone, for whatever reason, the Villa player will be able to prove her manager's trust in her to be well-placed.
The starters on the day did well to put this match out of question early. Aggie Beever-Jones had a first-half hat trick, and Lucy Bronze along with Beth Mead soon added to the tally to give England a 5-0 lead before the halftime whistle. Chloe Kelly added a header around the 62-minute mark to provide the sixth goal for the hosts at Wembley.
This was a performance that saw Portugal able to manage something in the attack only a handful of times. Between the starting XI midfielders, such as Jess Carter, Grace Clinton, and Keira Walsh, England was able to control most of the match and ensure that their opponents were never able to get a foothold in the match.
Opportunity against tough opponent for Aston Villa Women midfielder
Wiegman's side will now face Spain in a must-win match for the chance to advance to the knockout stages in the Nations League competition as the Group A3 winners. That fixture will take place on June 3rd.
England sits at 10 points, and the Spaniards are in the lead with 12. Against a good team, the Lionesses will need to be at their best when they travel to Barcelona. As seen on Friday in particular, there is not only plenty of quality on this squad, but they too are one of the best in the world and will look forward to proving equal to this upcoming challenge.
