It has not been an easy start to the season for Aston Villa. Lately, the final stages of the summer transfer window have been clouded by the potential move of Emiliano Martínez to Manchester United.
For some supporters, this near-exit will make it difficult to fully believe that the keeper is indeed all-in for Villa. If, however, the Argentina international continues to string performances together as what was seen against Everton, his reputation will only be mended among those who are still upset over what nearly transpired.
What the match against the Toffees should show, though, is how incredibly important Martínez is and continues to be for the club. This was highlighted around the 71st minute. Jack Grealish crossed the ball to Michael Keane. The defender's header should have resulted in the breakthrough for the home side. Instead, 'Dibu' thwarted his effort and pushed the ball away with his fully extended and stretched-out hand in a great display of athleticism.
These are the types of saves that many have come to expect from Martínez. His high-level play can be taken for granted to an extent.
Message from Aston Villa keeper
Following the clean sheet, Martínez made certain to remain on the pitch as long as possible to show his appreciation for the traveling Villa fans. He would later on take to X, in which the keeper made it clear how much it means for him to be in the claret and blue.
Any ill will that may have been present appears to be an afterthought, at least for the time being. For a side that is desperately looking to get its first win of the campaign, it does provide an element of comfort to see Martínez back in the good graces of those in the dressing room. Eventually, more and more Villa fans who expressed their disappointment will once again be only too glad to cheer for the world's number one.
