There are a couple of reasons why the international break was sorely needed at this moment for Aston Villa. Arguably, the most important single aspect at the club that has the most impact is the continued development of Emiliano Martínez.
For now, 'Dibu' is off to help Argentina with World Cup qualifiers. This also provides a chance for Martínez to reset his mind and evaluate how he wishes to proceed from here.
It is certainly possible that Martínez will want to go the route of Alexander Isak. Even with the transfer window closed, if he feels that the relationship with Villa is that poor, he could end up choosing to simply train on his own, preparing for an eventual January move.
Going months, though, potentially, without playing in a match is a lot for anyone. Most likely, Martínez will attempt to ingratiate himself into the good graces of Unai Emery and the team again.
Potential temperature of Aston Villa dressing room
There will certainly be varying opinions and feelings within the dressing room in regard to the late developments of the keeper. It is safe to assume, though, that there will be a significant number of players who are annoyed about the last-moment nature of how this transpired and will be looking for some form of renewed commitment from Martínez.
While the Argentina international is celebrating his birthday, on a day that would otherwise be celebrated by all Villa fans, it comes with many mixed and highly charged emotions.
Some supporters will find it difficult, if not outright impossible, to forgive Martínez. How Emery handles this specific challenge could very well end up defining his legacy at Villa.
