Aston Villa have thrown their hat into the ring alongside Real Madrid and Chelsea in the chase for RB Leipzig's rising star, Castello Lukeba. The 21-year-old French defender has become a hot commodity in European football, with Villa's interest signalling their ambition to bolster their struggling defence according to Football Insider.

Unai Emery's squad have been grappling with defensive issues this season, letting in nine goals in their first seven Premier League matches. This poor record places them as the second-worst defensive team in the top half of the table. The situation has been exacerbated by injuries to key players, including Tyrone Mings' severe knee injury last season, from which he is still recovering, and Ezri Konsa's recent hamstring problem.

Villa's management see Lukeba as a potential fix for their leaky backline. The young defender's ability to tackle effectively and play out from the back could provide the stability Villa desperately need.

Lukeba's stock has been rising rapidly

Since joining RB Leipzig from Lyon in the summer of 2023, Lukeba has quickly established himself as a crucial player for the Bundesliga club. The France Under-21 international made an impressive 41 appearances last season and continues to be a regular fixture in Leipzig's line-up.

Lukeba's contract with Leipzig runs until 2028, which could make negotiations tricky. However, Leipzig's reputation for developing and selling players at a profit suggests a deal might be possible if the right offer comes along.

It will not be easy for Villa to sign Lukeba

Villa face tough competition from Chelsea and Real Madrid, both of whom are in the market for long-term defensive solutions. Chelsea aim to strengthen their backline, while Real Madrid are looking for alternatives to their ageing defenders, David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger.

Villa's ability to compete with these European giants for Lukeba's signature could mark a turning point in their quest for defensive stability. It remains to be seen whether they can outmanoeuvre their rivals and secure the services of this promising young talent.
