André Onana has now faced a setback, and the Manchester United keeper will miss all preseason activity due to a hamstring injury. Aston Villa keeper Emiliano Martínez has now been reintroduced into the headlines as a potential option for the Ruben Amorim side to turn to.
The Telegraph's Mike McGrath reported that Onana's status for the opening match against Arsenal is now in doubt due to the unknown exact extent of his ability to be able to return before the start of the upcoming season.
There is not much of an increased need for United to make a move for 'Dibu' now, even with their top keeper option not being able to train and potentially missing the beginning part of the campaign.
Injury aside, United are wanting too much for their own players while being perfectly happy to lowballother clubs like Villa for a transfer. It is because of this aspect that there is not too much of a likelihood of Villa and United being able to come to an agreement for the Argentina international.
For one, it has to still be remembered that Martínez will miss the first game of the new season. Although it was against United, his potentially joining the side he picked up a red card against doesn't allow for the single-game suspension to be taken away.
Martínez's continued stay at Aston Villa
United wouldn't want to pay top money for someone to compete with Onana on his return, only to have to turn to someone else for the first Matchday anyway.
Onana's return is also the aspect that matters a lot in this discussion. It is known that United probably could meet the asking price of Villa, but there wouldn't be too much of a desire to have two starting-caliber keepers, in effect meaning there would be a waste of someone being on the bench.
Martínez is staying at Villa. United remains a non-option.
