When Aston Villa were given time and allowed to comfortably build from the back, they looked to be one of the better sides in Europe. Others picked up on this and began to implement a more deliberate and immediate high-pressure response.
From the big matches that Villa lost, their inability to properly deal with a high press did not allow Unai Emery's men to pose enough of a threat within the 90 minutes, and it was difficult for much of anything positive to be seen as this particular aspect was unfolding.
A potential counter from Monchi and Emery could be to bring in Jhon Lucumí.
Currently at Bologna, the Colombian has reportedly come under the radar of Villa. Yasin Özcan is a newcomer who will soon make his way to B6. If the reports are to be believed, Emery may soon be introducing one more center-back to the fold.
In truth, it is an area, like any other, that could always use an extra set of legs. This is particularly true with the continued push to do well across all competitions and the aim to finish in a Champions League spot.
Emery enjoys having his defenders able to play a direct role in the attack. The modern game dictates that all players have to be able to contribute going forward. After winning the ball back, being able to make a quick transition and punish the opposition for losing the ball is critical.
Sometimes, catching out a team after they give up possession proves to be the only time that a side can hope to generate a quality look.
Fit within Aston Villa boss' vision
Lucumi would be able to provide the look that Emery wants to see if he were to come to Villa. The Colombian has good composure on the ball and does well to feint away from the opposition attackers, which he then uses to dribble into space or find a teammate further up the pitch.
Certainly, anyone can make a mistake or be on the receiving end of a well-timed press. With Lucumi on the pitch, that would not be as much of a concern compared to most other defenders throughout Europe.
