Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz signed a new long-term contract with Aston Villa on Friday that will keep him at the Birmingham club until 2026.
The agreement comes two months after Villa turned down three approaches by Arsenal to sign Luiz on the final days of the summer transfer window. Luiz was reportedly keen on the move but Villa considered the player to be “untouchable.”
“I’m so happy in this club and I love this club,” said Luiz. “I love the people here, the staff and the players.
“This club opened the door for me when I came to England to play in the Premier League. I’m so happy because I’m staying here and my choice is here.”
Luiz signed for Villa from Manchester City in the summer of 2019 and has since gone on to make 120 appearances across all competitions.
The Vasco da Gama product has won nine caps for the Brazilian national team and was a member of the squad that won gold at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
