Aston Villa agree deal for Sevilla’s Diego Carlos
Aston Villa announced last week that the club reached an agreement with Sevilla for the transfer of defender Diego Carlos.
Fabrizio Romano reported on Thursday morning that Villa were progressing in talks with Sevilla and less than one half hour later the club announced an agreement was made.
The 29-year-old Brazilian made 102 La Liga appearances for Sevilla after joining in the summer of 2019. In 2021-22 he anchored the league’s best defense and powered the club to a fourth-place finish.
In his first season with Sevilla (2019-20) the club won their record sixth UEFA Europa League title.
A Desportivo Brasil product, Carlos moved to Portugal’s Estoril in 2014 and then Nantes in France in 2016.
Carlos earned his first senior call up for Brazil in November of 2020 for a pair of World Cup qualifying matches by did not see game time.
He helped the Brazilian Olympic team win the gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games alongside future Villa teammate Douglas Luiz.
Carlos is Villa’s third signing of the summer having previously agreed terms with Philippe Coutinho and Boubacar Kamara. The defender is expected to undergo a medical and finalize personal terms soon.
