Jack Grealish has finally made his first-team debut for England in the stalemate draw in Copenhagen tonight.
The Villa captain came on for Leeds United midfielder, Kalvin Phillips, in the 76 minute of the game in hope of bringing some much-needed creativity and spark to the attack.
Jack was deployed in the front three forcing Mason Mount to dropped back in midfield after he replaced a disappointing Jadon Sancho.
He has now become the 75th Villa player to represent England and according to Squawka, Grealish created more chances than Sancho, Phillips, Declan Rice and Harry Kane combined.
Emotion played a part as he warmed up to come on for his first competitive international appearance, ending any speculation he was considering a return to the “emerald green” of Ireland.
"“I was actually a bit emotional. It’s something you dream of. Everyone dreams as a little kid of playing for England. It was such a privilege coming on and it’s a shame we couldn’t get the win in the end. I want to thank Gareth [Southgate] for giving me the opportunity and hopefully it is the first of many.”"
Despite thanking the manager, many claret and blue fans have criticised their former centre back for not considering Grealish from the start.
“Incompetent”, “joke of a manager”, “fraud” and “useless” are the adjectives being banded around aimed at the England manager for not giving the attacking midfielder more time on the grass.
Who knows whether England will be returning from Scandinavia with six points rather than four if Grealish played the majority of the second half, or even started the game.
Despite the grievances, Villa fans are proud of their very own featuring for the Three Lions. They turned to Twitter to express their delight at seeing their superstar in white.
None more than the club itself.
The form displayed in 20 minutes will give Villa fans optimism with their season less than two weeks away. Villa will be needing the youth product to hit the ground running should he remain with the squad after being linked with a transfer throughout the close season.
We will certainly be hoping that he stars in front of the Holte End and stays fit to feature in many more international squads to come.
