Aston Villa fans are debating a return to the badge from the 1980s. With Leeds United launching a new badge, and the subsequent furore, the discussion about a return has re-emerged.
With much fanfare, Leeds United launched a new crest yesterday to ridicule. The ‘sell’ via social media said that it had taken six months of research. It proclaimed that 10,000 fans had been consulted but reaction suggested less than favourable research.
Many fans tweeted their displeasure as news of the change hit the internet. Many fans decided that they would produce their own versions. Going viral, everyone found an opinion about the crest. Even the Aston Villa social media team couldn’t help themselves:
The storm has stirred up some fans who want a return to the 1980s ’round’ badge. The badge was worn during Aston Villa’s most successful period and some fans want to see a return. Some fan groups have designed their own logos based on this iconic design.
The Birmingham Mail reminded Aston Villa fans that Chief Executive Officer Keith Wyness could consider a change should enough fans want it. This was said during a radio phone-in but the Aston Villa management do appear to follow through with their promises.
It is unlikely that this would be considered anytime soon as the current badge was only introduced for the 2016/17 season. As with this last change, it would take a period of consultation including fan focus groups before any return to the old badge.

We conducted a quick Twitter poll and 82% said that they think the badge should be changed. It is going to take far more fans than the sample who participated, in the poll, to get any change. Many fans also commented on the question. Suggestions included adding the white star onto the old badge. One fan was worried that his tattoo would be ruined….
