Every other Premier League side appears to be in a race to sign the best available and the most. Aston Villa, on the other hand, are entirely comfortable heading into the upcoming campaign with the squad as has been featured so far during the preseason. While everyone else looks to add the equivalent of Messi or Ronaldo at each position, Villa are, in a sense, bucking the trend.
While it may not have been the initial plan, the financial restrictions have somewhat forced the matter. Although, it must be added that it is possible that Unai Emery and Monchi would have shown a willingness to have the same approach during the current summer.
The focus has been on keeping the current corps intact. For the club, the focus has been to re-sign those already on the squad and currently continue to build on what has already been established in B6.
Granted, if it weren't for the restrictions, it is entirely possible that they would go out to make a splash signing. Still, the current way in which the club continues to operate is not too bad of an option.
It can also be dangerous to continue to be envious of others. While clubs may make what is perceived to be a more ambitious move, in sports, the constant addition of new players can also at times border on being reckless.
Comparison to last year's Aston Villa
The current Villa side is good enough to be competitive and do well in the Premier League and in other tournaments. As is, there are areas in which someone who realistically could be viewed as a regular starter will be left out, just like last year when Villa implemented the 'starting 22.'
There is still not a reason to panic or be alarmed as a Villa supporter. The strength of the squad is at a high level, ready to compete for that ultimate triumph that sees the team hoist a trophy at the end.
