One name that had been heavily linked with a move to Aston Villa earlier in the transfer window was Atletico Madrid defender Mario Hermoso. Rumours were swirling around social media for weeks as a deal for Hermoso seemed to be getting close. However, the rumours went quiet amidst Villa's busy few weeks signing other players.

Fast forward to today's Home kit launch and Mario Hermoso has been active on social media in liking Aston Villa's content. This has of course reignited the suspicion that a move for the left-sided centre-half could be back on.

Hermoso featured 45 times for Atletico Madrid last season with nine of those appearances coming in the UEFA Champions League. The Spaniard is currently without a club following the expiry of his contract in the Spanish capital and Villa could well make a smart move for the defender.

Villa do of course already have Pau Torres and Tyrone Mings in Hermoso's position which begs the question - do Villa really need Hermoso? With 5 caps for his country and years of experience playing in the Spanish top flight and in Europe's most elite club competition he would bring valuable experience and quality to the club.

According to TeamTalk, Hermoso is close to a move to Italy but there are several Premier League clubs trying to convince Hermoso to join them. Napoli have been viewed as Hermoso’s most likely destination and the player has even travelled to Naples to get a deal over the line. The two parties have not been able to finalise a contract agreement however and the idea of playing Premier League football is said to be swaying the decision.

"“According to the Italian media, Tottenham, Chelsea and Villa are the three main clubs trying to convince Hermoso to reject Napoli and instead try himself out in the Premier League.”"

Most Villa fans are of the opinion that another centre-half is needed at the club and other a such as Trevoh Chalobah have been mentioned as a result of him being left out of Chelsea’s pre-season tour to America.
