Following many reports earlier this month regarding the possible transfer of Ross Barkley from Luton Town, Fabrizio Romano has this morning confirmed that Aston Villa are set to enter into the formal stages to resign the English midfielder.

The fee is believed to be around the £5 million mark and having already agreed to the personal and contract terms, Barkley just needs to complete a medial before officially being announced as Villa's first signing of the summer transfer window.

Unai Emery has been an admirer of the former England international for a long time and sees him as being an important part of the squad next season. Barkley had a superb season for recently relegated Luton, proving how far he has come and how much he has grown as a player since his loan spell at Aston Villa back in 2021.

Having seen Tim Iroegbunam leave the club this week with a move to Everton, Leander Dendoncker likely to leave the club this summer and Boubacar Kamara being out with injury until at least October, Barkley will add much needed depth as well as great quality to the Villa midfield. Barkley is particularly strong from a dead ball, and with Douglas Luiz of course heading to Juventus it is likely Barkley will prove vital for Villa from corners and free kicks.

It is expected that the official announcement regarding Barkley's signing will come in the early parts of next week.
