Injury update provided on Aston Villa's two long-term absentees
Aston Villa's two long-term absentees Boubacar Kamara and Tyrone Mings are tipped to be edging closer to a return to action. Kamara has been out of action since suffering a serious knee injury against Manchester United in February, seven months ago now. The absence has been even longer for defender Tyrone Mings who has not played at all since being stretchered off the pitch in the defeat to Newcastle United on the opening day of the 2023/24 season.
Positive news for former captain Mings
Former Aston Villa captain Mings has had a nightmare 12 months following his ACL injury suffered just 25 minutes into the new season last August. Having vanished from social media for an extended period, fans were beginning to worry that they might not see Mings play again and the rumours of an early retirement loomed. Thankfully, since December last year Mings has been updating fans every couple of months with videos of his rehabilitation and progress before making his return to training during pre-season.
Having now returned to full training with the rest of the Villa squad, Mings is being tipped to make his return to competitive action for Aston Villa's Under-21's in their Football League Trophy clash with Fleetwood Town this evening. Should he play a part in the match, it would celebrate the hard work and dedication Mings showed during an extremely difficult period. Mings, even if he does feature in tonight's game, will still be eased back into the first-team squad and it will likely be a few weeks before we see Mings as part of the matchday squad.
Kamara just a few weeks away
Boubacar Kamara proved to be a key player in the Aston Villa midfield following his move from Marseille in the summer of 2022. Kamara, when fit, provides excellent stability in front of the Villa defense and his partnership with Douglas Luiz in midfield was a key reason for Villa qualifying for the UEFA Europa Conference League in his first season with the club.
However, Kamara has now been missing from the Villa side since February and Unai Emery will be keen to see him return. Speaking to 'Villa News' Dr Rajpal Brar, a sports injury expert, said, "Considering his expected date is mid to late October, they’ll likely currently be ramping up to more football-specific activities and gradually increasing that intensity and duration." He also went on to say:
""The key is getting them ready for partial training and then moving to full training from there so he’d perhaps be back in some training on the other side of the international break in the final week of September.""
Unai Emery will hope to have both players fit and firing sooner rather than later to help add important quality in depth to the squad.
