Brentford are poised to beat Aston Villa to the signing of Elfsborg goalkeeper Hákon Valdimarsson, according to a report by HITC Sport.

The likes of Sheffield United, Wolves, Nottingham Forest and Celtic have also been credited with an interest in the stopper.

Valdimarsson, 22, has made the number one spot his own at Elfsborg over the past few years and is now set to embark on a new chapter in his career in the Premier League at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The Iceland international, who has five caps under his belt to date, was on the books at Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur and Íþróttafélagið Grótta as a youngster in his native country before moving to Sweden in 2021.

He has since made 137 games for his current club in all competitions but they are now preparing to lose him.

Aston Villa have been linked with a move for the Allsvenskan star and he could have been useful competition and back-up in their goalkeeping department. However, he wouldn't have got into their first-team ahead of Emi Martinez and his game time would have been hard to come by whilst the Argentinian was still part of Unai Emery's squad.

Therefore, a switch to Brentford probably suits him more right now. Teams like Sheffield United, Wolves and Celtic will all also have to look elsewhere for reinforcements between the sticks between now and the end of the transfer window.

Aston Villa are back in action on Friday with an FA Cup trip to Chelsea.
