Nico Williams is a player in demand following his incredible performances for Spain at this summers European Championships. The Athletic Bilbao winger has been linked with a move away from the club this summer for a move to a Champions League club and it is believed Aston Villa and Manager Unai Emery are huge admirers.

However, it is also well known that Barcelona are keen to sign Williams but a move was thought to be potentially difficult due to financial restrictions.

""Barça are in dire financial straits: such is the state of things that they're not even sure if they can register contract extensions for existing players due to La Liga's financial rules, let alone bring in new players this summer.""

Sam Marsden (ESPN)

The reported financial difficulties at the Nou Camp don't prevent Barcelona being linked with most high-profile players however. It has been reported this evening by Mundo Deportivo that Barcelona are now lining up a move for RB Leipzig star Dani Olmo. Olmo was join-top goal scorer at Euro 2024 and a hugely influencial factor in his Spanish side winning the tournament.

Should Barcelona make a move for Olmo it may well improve Aston Villa's chances of making a move for Nico Williams. Villa are likely to lose French winger Moussa Diaby in the next few days as he closes in on signing for Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia. Diaby, who scored 10 goals and produced 9 assists across all competitions for Villa last season, is due to leave the club for a fee of £55 million. This deal is likely to include add-ons.

As a result there is a chance that despite announcing the signing of Jaden Philogene, another exciting talent on the wing, Villa may look to elevate their squad to another level in terms of ability by chancing their arm at signing Williams. With Villa likely to announce the signing of Amadou Onana from Everton for £50 million in the next few days, a move for Williams could prove too much for the club financially.
