Aston Villa's promising young winger, Samuel Iling-Junior, is on the brink of a surprising return to Serie A, just two months after joining the Premier League club. The 20-year-old is set to join Bologna on a season-long loan, with the move expected to be finalised following a medical scheduled for Sunday.

Loan agreement reached

According to Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa and Bologna have successfully negotiated the terms of Iling-Junior's temporary transfer, with the Italian side agreeing to cover his salary throughout the loan period. Notably, the agreement does not include an option to buy, signalling Villa's intention to retain the England youth international for future plans. This move follows Iling-Junior's £18.75 million transfer to Villa Park in early July, a deal that coincided with Douglas Luiz's £42 million transfer to Juventus.

Versatile player seeking playing time

Iling-Junior's versatility is one of his standout qualities, as he is capable of playing as a left-winger, left wing-back, or left-back. During his tenure at Juventus, he made 36 appearances in Serie A and scored two goals. Last season alone, he featured in 27 matches, starting six times and making 20 appearances as a substitute.

The decision to seek a loan move arises from the stiff competition for places within Aston Villa's squad. With players like Jacob Ramsey, Morgan Rogers, Emi Buendia, and John McGinn competing for similar roles, Iling-Junior's opportunities for regular first-team action at Villa Park seemed limited.

Bologna's Champions League ambitions

Bologna's pursuit of Iling-Junior is fuelled by their ambitions following a successful 2023-24 season, which saw them qualify for the Champions League. The club has undergone significant changes this summer, with key departures such as Joshua Zirkzee and Riccardo Calafiori.

Iling-Junior's addition is expected to bolster their squad as they gear up for the dual challenges of Serie A and the Champions League. For Iling-Junior, this move offers a valuable chance to secure regular playing time and continue his development in a familiar league. The prospect of participating in Champions League matches adds further allure to the loan deal.

Villa's commitment to youth development

Aston Villa's decision to loan out Iling-Junior underscores their commitment to developing young talent. The club aims for him to return from his loan spell as a more polished and experienced player, ready to compete for a spot in their talented squad.

Both clubs are working diligently to complete the necessary paperwork.
