Aston Villa star misses out on Euro 2024 selection
One of Aston Villa’s key players this season has, to everyone’s surprise, missed on selection for his national squad for this summer’s European Championships. That man is Pau Torres.
For anyone that has watched Villa play this season they would tell you that Torres was one of the signings of the season in the Premier League. His ability as a ball playing centre half has been a key factor in the progress of Villa’s performances and results and a big reason as to why Villa finished so high up the league table. Torres was signed by Unai Emery for a fee of 35 million euros last summer and Villa fans will tell you he was worth every penny.
Torres has 24 caps for his country Spain and most were expecting that number to grow this summer due to that brilliant form he has shown all season for his club. However, manager Luis de la Fuente has decided not to include Torres and instead opted for the likes of Dani Vivian (Athletic Bilbao) and Robin Le Normad (Real Sociedad).
It is incredible to think that someone who has performed at Torres's level in the best league in the world and played a huge part in Villa's highest league finish for over three decades has missed out. Spain will miss his ability to carry the ball out from the back with ease and the thread of a needle passes through the lines.
Despite the obvious disappointment for the player himself, Villa fans will be glad to see Torres will be able to recover fully from the long and difficult season without the stress of a major international tournament. Torres will again be a key figure for Unai Emery next season and the more his focus is on Villa the better as far as the team are concerned.
