Aston Villa failed to get Calum Chambers off their books before the end of the January transfer window.

The former Arsenal man, 29, was linked with Championship pair West Brom and Hull City on deadline day but an exit didn't materialise in the end.

He has fallen way down the pecking order at Villa Park and a departure this winter would have been ideal for all parties involved. Instead, he now has to wait until the summer to find a new home.

Chambers' game time has significantly dried up over recent times and an exit to a promotion chaser in the second tier like West Brom or Hull would have helped him get his career back on track and become part of a project to be excited about.

'Forgotten man'

Speaking recently to GiveMeSport, reporter Dean Jones provided this update on the player's situation: “Chambers is a forgotten man. He was back on the bench for Villa at Fulham, so fans saw him warming up, but there doesn't seem to be any way back for him at Villa Park. Having somebody sitting there picking up £50,000 per week is not ideal.

“I think the level of clubs that were looking at Chambers weren't enticing for him halfway through the season. He’s better off seeing out this season, properly approaching the summer window, and seeing what avenues can open up for him.

"Obviously, we've seen Chambers play throughout his career at different stages, and we know that he's got a lot of qualities, but we've seen the end of him at Aston Villa now.”

Chambers' time at Aston Villa hasn't worked out and although he provides depth to their defensive department, it is unlikely that he will ever break into Emery's plans.

He has made only four appearances so far this term, with only one coming in the league.

Aston Villa are back in action this weekend with an away trip to Luton Town as they look to keep their push for the Champions League on track.
