According to David Ornstein, Aston Villa are growing closer to selling Cameron Archer this summer. The young forward spent last season on loan at Sheffield United before returning to Villa Park under the terms of the contract signed ahead of his move to Bramall Lane.

This time round it is another newly promoted side, Southampton, that are looking to sign the Villa academy graduate in order to boost their chances of staying in the Premier League next season.

Aston Villa have been trying to sell one of either Jhon Duran or Archer this summer in order to fund a move for a new attacking player. Due to PSR restrictions, Villa appear to be in a position of 'one-in-one-out' and therefore the sale of Archer is very likely to go towards bringing in another forward.

Cameron Archer, 22, has scored three goals in pre-season for Villa and his performances had led some fans to suggest the youngster should remain at the club to be Ollie Watkins' back-up. However, if Villa were to receive a fee in the region of Β£10-15 million in a permanent deal then this could go some way to bringing in a player with greater quality and experience ahead of a Champions League season.

A deal that would see Diego Carlos head to Fulham is also believed to still be close and therefore the exits of the Brazilian defender and Archer could see Villa bring in a new defender and forward in the next couple of weeks. Reports this evening have suggested that a deal for Dutch defender Lutsharel Geertruida is getting closer and that move will provide a significant boost in quality to the defence.

Meanwhile, Villa remain in contact with Joao Felix over a potential move from Atletico although Chelsea are believed to be the favourites to sign the Portuguese forward. However, reports today have suggested that Atletico Madrid have rejected from Chelsea for €45 million and are asking for €60 million. Felix is reportedly open to a move to Aston Villa following talks with Unai Emery and there is still a chance that Villa could get their number one target.
