The middle of a season can seem like an odd time for Aston Villa to have a camp abroad, much less a friendly. For Unai Emery, however, the camp in Dubai gives an opportunity to have focused training sessions with his players. Those not part of their national teams get to remain sharp or work back from their injuries. Some of the youth academy members are also seizing this chance to work in this first-team environment.

With roughly two and a half weeks between the last game against Club Brugge and the upcoming match against Preston North End, the boss wanted to find a way to keep his squad locked in for the remainder of the year. A change of scenery and reset are often good ways, when possible, to provide a much-needed lift in what is a grueling season.

While the final result is a side aspect, the 3-1 victory wasn't without some flair from the Al Ain hosts. On a sloppy giveaway by Tyrone Mings, the UAE side found themselves ahead. It didn't take long, though, for Marco Asensio to ensure that AVFC took control. The Spaniard was directly involved in two goals with an assist and a goal himself.

Boubacar Kamara and Asensio paired up for a lovely combination on the right-hand side that saw the Spanish player show off his finishing abilities. Attendees nearly saw the favor being returned with a similar linkup, but the goal was called back through offsides.

From a set piece, however, Asensio found the clever run from Axel Disasi, and Kane Taylor beat the keeper with a strong left-footed shot. It was an overall positive showing from those on the pitch, and the second half especially gave Emery the chance to unload his bench.

Successful trip away from Aston Villa

More importantly, it was good for someone like Pau Torres, who is working back from injury, to get a good run in. It was also nice for Jacob Ramsey to be involved in the goal-scoring effort as he tallied an assist. There weren't any injuries or knocks picked up, and Emery can look back positively on this Aston Villa trip to Dubai.

Every year is different, but the manager did a good job of approaching the prolonged rest inbetween fixtures. Those representing their countries will be fine. For senior players who weren't selected, the camp and friendly proved to be a good trip to build comradery and work more on Emery's coaching philosophy in a unique setting.
