Aston Villa have identified a potential replacement for Ezri Konsa, as the club have reportedly seen a bid for Southampton centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis rejected.
According to The Athletic, the offer was for £18m plus add-ons, while the South Coast club are believed to be seeking £25m up front. Benfica had a bid of £17m rejected for the 24-year-old last weekend.
Harwood-Bellis is reportedly one of three options Villa are monitoring, but given they have made an official bid, it would seem he is the priority. Tosin Adarabioyo and Fikayo Tomori were both linked to Villa by different media outlets yesterday.
Villa need to replace Konsa, who is set to join Arsenal in a deal worth an initial £51m.
On paper, Harwood-Bellis looks a good fit due to his comfortability on the ball and strong passing ability. At 24, he would also continue the trend of Villa getting younger throughout the squad this summer.
He came up in Manchester City’s academy and was sent on various loans, including to Southampton, before making a £20m permanent switch there in 2024.
Harwood-Bellis has been coached by Pep Guardiola and twice by current Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany, once with Anderlecht and then again with Burnley. He has been ingrained in possession-based football throughout his career, even under Russell Martin at Southampton.
Whether he can make the step up to Villa is a projection, as he has only played one season in the Premier League, when the Saints were relegated in 2024/25. If he does sign, the idea will be that he suits Emery’s system and simply needs the chance to play in a stronger team.
There are multiple elements of Villa’s movements since Konsa’s sale was sanctioned that are notable. The first is that all three centre-backs they have been connected to are English.
The reason that matters is the Premier League requires eight homegrown players to be named in the 25-man squad of each team, and Villa are in danger of not meeting the quota. These are players who were registered with an English club three full years before their 21st birthday.
If Villa were to sell Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Martínez as well as Konsa, they would likely be down to nine players, which would give them little room to operate if they wanted to sell players like Lamare Bogarde, who has interest from elsewhere, or Tammy Abraham, for example.
Based on the three players presumed to be on Villa’s shortlist, it would seem the club are intent on replacing Konsa with another homegrown player.
The other interesting element is that even if Villa pay the £25m Southampton are asking for, they would only be spending less than half of the money received for Konsa.
They have other needs, namely a central midfielder to replace the injured Amadou Onana and potentially a right winger. Spending less on a centre-back could unlock targets at other positions.
It seems unlikely the price Southampton are asking for will be prohibitive to a deal, and the move would surely appeal to Harwood-Bellis. If he is Villa’s top target, it feels like there is a good chance this one gets done.
