Aston Villa must navigate PSR by means other than selling Amadou Onana

There are a lot of moves that can be done to help Aston Villa's PSR situation. Most likely, selling players like Philippe Coutinho, who have been out on loan anyway and have another club already interested and lined up, will be enough to ease most concerns there.

Something that cannot happen is for Villa to sell critically important players just for the sake of staying under this PSR line. Amadou Onana is, of course, someone who has a lot of interest. Those asking about his services would only increase their efforts that much more if it were known that the Belgium international was 100% available.

This is the exact instance of someone who Villa should not even entertain letting go from the side. Since arriving, Onana has shown a tremendous amount of appreciation for the badge. His work rate and skill level in the midfield are needed on every squad as is.

While the team has Youri Tielemans and Boubacar Kamara already, this past season should show that there can never be a lack of talent for depth throughout the roster.

The situation is not that dire where the club needs to act like the business operation side of things needs to function like an outlet wholesale store. Keeping someone like Onana, who sees the vision and has come to work his way into an important role in Unai Emery's rotation, is a must.

There are promising players at the same position who are coming up through the academy, and there are always options to look elsewhere for those who are cheaper. Either way, the aim in both cases is to find someone like Onana. Villa need someone who can impose their will in the midfield area and who is willing to do whatever it takes.

Villa will have to find a way around the PSR guidelines this summer. They will have to do so by exploring options outside of Onana.
