One aspect that can be overlooked of Aston Villa having multiple capable players for the same position is the nature of competition. It can, of course, be hugely beneficial for someone to know heading into each week that they are going to be the starter. Having the expectation of being able to play 90 minutes makes it so that there can be a certain comfort level for the player.
On the reverse end of that, having someone else potentially in the wings, ready to be there to replace someone in the starting XI, can also bring out the best and different elements from players.
Being able to go to training and push each other with the knowledge of a series of poor performances resulting in someone else taking over the role can make it so that the intensity levels remain at the needed levels to ensure a quality product in the Premier League.
This is something that can be best seen at Villa at left-back. Ian Maatsen and Lucas Digne could both conceivably be regular starters for most sides in Europe.
Continued impressive play from Aston Villa defenders
The fear of having more of a rotational approach can be that a certain player is then unable to get into a rhythm and is forced to continuously attempt to regain their footing on the pitch and within the system again. This aspect, however, was not present with the Dutchman or Frenchman during the past season.
Maatsen and Digne did well whenever they did end up playing and made it something of a seamless transition whenever the other was replaced.
In truth, this is what is needed in the modern game. It is unreasonable to expect anyone to be able to play the entirety of every match. This makes it impressive coming from Maatsen and Digne. The ability of the left-backs to be able to interchange is a luxury that Villa would do well to continue to have for a while to come within the club.
