Aston Villa sign Youri Tielemans on free transfer from Leicester City
Aston Villa announced the signing of midfielder Youri Tielemans on a free transfer on June 10.
Tielemans arrives in Birmingham from recently relegated Leicester City, where he made 195 appearances for the Foxes across all competitions since 2019. He was a part of the squad that one the FA Cup in 2021.
The former Monaco and Anderlecht standout has five goals in 58 caps for the Belgium national team and played in all three of the Red Devils’ 2022 World Cup matches.
Admired by Villa manager Unai Emery for some time, Tielemans brings a wealth of experience to a side set to participate in European competition for the first time in 13 years. He’ll fuel competition in a midfield that already features the likes of Douglas Luiz, Boubacar Kamara, Jacob Ramsey, and skipper John McGinn.
“I had a very nice project on the table,” Tielemans told RTL Sports about his decision to sign for Villa. “The coach spoke to me and I also had discussions with the club. The project really convinced me.
“Aston Villa are a big club in England, and I feel they have the ambition to keep growing. That’s what made me want to choose them. I think we already have a great team. It would be really nice to get this project off to a good start,” he added.
