Aston Villa outlast Spurs in massive victory at Villa Park
Aston Villa defeated Tottenham 2-1 on Saturday in a massive win for the Lions. Villa have now moved into 7th place in the Premier League table, and are behind Tottenham due to goal differential.
An eighth-minute goal from Jacob Ramsey put Aston Villa ahead early, with the local lad finishing off a pass into the penalty area made by Leon Bailey. At the halftime whistle, the early goal was the difference as Villa held Tottenham shot-less in the first half.
Late in the second half, Villa were rewarded a free kick nearly 25 yards away from goal, and who else but Douglas Luiz placed it in the top right corner to make it 2-0 in the 72nd minute. The Brazilian beat out Forster, who managed to get a glove to the shot, but it wasn’t enough to stop the perfectly placed free kick.
Captain John McGinn made his presence felt on the pitch today with an incredible performance against the Tottenham midfield. A late penalty goal from Harry Kane erased a clean-sheet-worthy performance from the squad, but the win was secured regardless.
Aston Villa completed their first league double over Tottenham since 1995-96
The Lions have now won six-straight home league games, for the first time since February 1993. Villa Park has become a fortress, and Villa return home to play Brighton on May 28.
Looking ahead to next week, Aston Villa will take on Liverpool at Anfield in a must-win game if they wish to play in European competition next season. Unai Emery will try to lead his squad to victory away from home against the Reds for the first time since September 2014.
The win has secured a top-10 finish for the Lions for the first time in over a decade, showing the effect Emery has had on this club. Since taking charge, Emery is averaging nearly 2 points per game, which is third-most in the Premier League.
