Aston Villa’s 2022/23 Premier League campaign is coming to a close with European play for 2023/24 still attainable. Summer transfers will begin soon as the domestic window opens June 13 in England.
Villa were recently linked to Real Madrid midfielder Marco Asensio, whose contract is set to expire this season. The 27-year-old is keen to stay with Real Madrid, but no deal has been reached with the club. Villa wish to capitalize on a free transfer opportunity if Asensio fails to resign.
The Spaniard would play a massive role in the attacking midfield next season, a position that Villa lacks depth in. With rumors of Leon Bailey and Philippe Coutinho leaving, Asensio would give Unai Emery a chance to handpick his players for the upcoming season.
Marco Asensio has recorded 11 goals and 7 assists for Real Madrid this season
Asensio is a terrific passer with great field vision, and would link up very well with forwards Ollie Watkins and Emi Buendía in attack. The Spanish midfielder could be an impactful player in the upcoming season under fellow Spaniard Emery.
Asensio played in the 2022 World Cup with Spain, scoring one goal over the span of four matches. He has two international career goals with Spain, but has 32 career goals with Real Madrid through seven seasons.
Asensio has mainly come off the bench for Real Madrid, playing just over 1,500 minutes this season through 38 appearances. He ranks in the 99th percentile in non-penalty goals per 90, proving how efficient he is on the pitch.
The international transfer window re-opens July 1st this summer
Aston Villa are reportedly expected to spend up to £200 million on transfers this summer, with club owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens heavily backing the manager. The attacking front is in serious need of an upgrade as the Lions have scored the least amount of goals out of every team in the top 10 of the Premier League table.
