Aston Villa’s deal for Ismaïla Sarr collapses
A reported deal for the transfer of Ismaïla Sarr from Watford to Aston Villa has all but fallen through, according to multiple sources.
Details of the potential transaction emerged after Villa’s 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace on Saturday. Fabrizio Romano confirmed that a €25m bid plus add-ons was accepted by Watford and that only loose ends on the player’s side had to be tied up.
But despite a medical reportedly scheduled, talks with Sarr broke down on Sunday and by Monday the deal had “collapsed.” John Percy said “issues emerged with structure of the deal, including Sarr’s personal terms.”
Initial reports of the potential transfer came as a shock to many Villa supporters. Sarr, a natural right winger, would have no apparent place in a Steven Gerrard side that currently does not employ wingers in the traditional sense.
Talk on Monday also suggested the deal fell through after Gerrard “decided not to progress it having held talks with the player.”
Chatter on Tuesday suggested Sarr could now sign a new contract with Watford.
