Aston Villa announced on Monday the season-long loan signing of left back Ludwig Augustinsson from Sevilla.
A Swedish international with 46 senior caps, Augustinsson made 27 appearances for Sevilla in all competitions in 2021/22. It’s understood Villa have the option to permanently sign the defender at season’s end.
In 19 La Liga appearances last season, Augustinsson averaged 2.05 successful tackles, 5.35 crosses, 2.05 clearances, and 1.03 chances created per 90 minutes.
Augustinsson played a part in three of Sevilla’s Champions League matches and featured twice in Europa League action.
The Swede will provide first-choice left back Lucas Digne healthy competition and manager Steven Gerrard experienced depth in defense. With the Premier League’s move to five substitutions for the 2022/23 campaign, depth in the mold of Augustinsson is a luxury Villa apparently can afford.
The 28-year-old Augustinsson will find a couple of familiar faces in the Villa squad in newly-signed Diego Carlos–whom which Augustinsson played with at Sevilla–and fellow Swedish international Robin Olson.
Augustinsson’s signing signals Gerrard’s intention to use veteran left back Ashley Young in a different role this season. Additionally, academy product Ben Chrisene is almost certain to depart on loan this window.
