Aston Villa announced earlier this week the signing of Swedish goalkeeper Robin Olsen on loan from Roma.

An experienced keeper with 54 international caps, Olsen will challenge Jed Steer to be Emi Martinez’s back-up through the spring.

Olsen spent the first half of the 2021-22 on loan at Sheffield United in the EFL Championship but was recalled by Roma when Villa registered interest in a loan move.

This is the 32-year-old’s fourth loan move since joining Roma in 2018. Other stops include Cagliari and Everton.

What should Villa fans expect from Olsen? Not much, as he’s set to provide additional cover between the sticks. Villa are out of the FA Cup, so there’s little opportunity for Olsen or Steer to play until the end of the season.

That said, extra cover is a good thing, especially if the coaching staff feels Steer isn’t a good enough No. 2.
