Aston Villa are close to completing their second signing of the January transfer window with reports suggesting the Birmingham side are in advanced negotiations to sign left back Lucas Digne from Everton.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed rumblings on Monday in a Tweet that said “new direct contacts will take place between Aston Villa and Everton” this week, but that the move is “not yet fully agreed between [the] clubs.”

Digne is out of favor with Everton boss Rafa Benitez and has made only 10 league appearances for the Toffees this season. He’s been keen on a move and the likes of Chelsea and Newcastle were reportedly interested in his services.

Gerrard has prioritized the signing of a left back as Matt Targett continues to struggle for form this season. On his day, Digne is one of the most dynamic full backs in the Premier League and would provide the type of attacking threat Gerrard is looking for on the left flank.

Rob Dorsett of SkySports said on Thursday that an agreed fee between £20-25 million was likely and that “personal terms not expected to be a problem.”

Digne signed for Everton in 2018 and has since made 110 appearances for the Liverpool side. The two years prior he was a Barcelona player and and a member of the squad that won the 2017-18 La Liga title.
