Which Man United players should be targeted in any swap deal?
By James Fudge
Manchester United have a vast array of talent, however there are few players not up for discussion with Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire, Mason Greenwood, Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes all no-go’s.
Dean Smith and the transfer team should be looking at the acquisition of Jesse Lingard, a player that could thrive in a forward position behind the striker. An opportunity of consistent first-team opportunities could see an upturn of his form, which saw him only score once and provide no assists in the Premier League last season. He showed great qualities in the England colours and will look to rediscover that form if given a persistent chance.
Another player linked with the squad is Daniel James. He featured heavily and shone at the start of the season, showing his Premier League qualities, however his performances dipped after January and became a player from the bench following the arrival of Fernandes. Now second to Greenwood and Rashford in the wide positions, the player will have to leave if he is to get first team football. The signing of Sancho, Grealish or Bournemouth’s David Brooks will surely put his place under increased threat.
The Welsh international will make up for the lack of pace within the squad and be in contention for regular action if he was to sign. Speculation of his future has been muted outside of a swap deal with Aston Villa.
Andreas Pereira and James Garner are possibilities but their signings will not get much excitement from the Holte End, while Juan Mata and Scott McTominay are ranked as unlikely.
Another possible target will be in the central back position. Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are likely to be both up for grabs given their situation at the club. Smalling will likely be cashed in given the level of interest in the player following star reviews on loan at Roma last season. Jones should be keen for a move after failing to get ahead of Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Eric Baily in the pecking order.
Injury problems for the player tipped as a future England captain will obviously be the main concern with high wages also a possible stumbling block.
Aston Villa are currently in the driving seat in terms of negotiations. Their only challenge is persuading their chosen player to take a step down from Champions League football to a possible relegation battle.
Despite this, the Claret Villans would rather see Jack Grealish wearing the number ten for his boyhood club next season.
