Aston Villa star John McGinn is set to miss the team’s Carabao Cup tie tonight against Liverpool due to a thigh injury.

According to a report by the Daily Mail, the Scotland international has been dealing with a tear to his thigh muscle and has been receiving painkilling injections to get through games as well as training.

It’s thought that McGinn had suffered the injury during Villa’s 2-0 league win over Newcastle United.

With Liverpool set to field a relatively unknown young team tonight, Villa boss Dean Smith is set to make the decision to not start McGinn, and given the games the team have coming up in the league, it’s not a bad thing.

The report from the Daily Mail also suggests that McGinn only resumed normal training last week, even though he featured for the full 90 minutes of the team’s games against Manchester United, Chelsea and Leicester City.

The Midfielder has been one of the stand out players in what has been a difficult return to the top flight for Villa so far. If there is still any concern over the health of McGinn’s thigh then making sure he is healthy moving forward simply must be a top priority for the Villans.

Despite the importance of the league, Villa manager Dean Smith also expressed the importance of tonight’s game against Liverpool:

Smith told the media on Monday:

“I’ve spoken before about this football club’s history in this competition and whilst we know the importance of the Premier League, this is a big game.

“We have to be really professional and we have to give the supporters something to shout about, and that’s up to us on Tuesday night.”
