The Aston Villa and Republic of Ireland midfielder put pen-to-paper on a new contract with the claret and blues.

Villa supporters woke-up to some pleasant news as midfielder Conor Hourihane put pen-to-paper on a new long-term extension with the club. The criminally underrated 28-year-old signs despite still having two years remaining on his previous deal.

With the new contract, it’s safe to assume Dean Smith sees the player as part of his vision for a rebuilt top-flight side. Whether that’s as a starting defensive midfielder, or the top backup at all three midfield positions, Hourihane will be important to the club.

His vision, ability to pick out incisive passes, and set piece ability remain a blessing to Villa. It was Hourihane’s pass, after all, that sprung Ahmed Elmohamady forward for the club’s opening goal in the Championship Play-Off Final.

Hourihane’s extension comes on the heels of Jack Grealish’s new deal that was signed less than one year ago. Furthermore, there have been rumors circulating that John McGinn (who has three years remaining) is set for a new contract in order to repel interest from rival clubs.

Interestingly enough, Villa have not made any contract details public this summer.

Typically, a mention of contract length is included in the posts, but the details on Hourihane’s deal are sparse. This was also the case for the transfers of Ezri Konsa, Tyrone Mings, and Wesley.

In any case, congratulations, Conor!

His left foot and bright smile remain enjoyable to watch. Hourihane climbed the ladder like few others have, going from League Two with Plymouth, to League One with Barnsley, to the second division and beyond with Aston Villa.

Next up, Europe and a place in the Champions League.
