The Swansea City midfielder – who was a surprise addition on deadline day – has returned to Wales following a hip operation.

Tom Carroll’s season is unfortunately over after a the Swansea midfielder decided to undergo a hip operation. His Aston Villa loan stint ends after two substitute appearances in the claret and blue.

It seems as though he tried to carry on the previous few weeks, but was not able to overcome the problem area.

Get well soon, Tom!

Carroll was an intriguing reclamation project for Villa, who were dealing with myriad injuries back in January. There was hope he would supplement John McGinn and Conor Hourihane before Jack Grealish returned from shin problems, but it was not to be.

In related Aston Villa injury news, Henri Lansbury has returned to the first-team. He is on the bench for the club’s road match against Sheffield Wednesday, replacing Keinan Davis. Dean Smith’s team remains unchanged otherwise. Furthermore, Smith revealed that a trio of defenders will return to training before the end of the season.

Could this create a logjam in the starting XI?

Axel Tuanzebe is back in the first-team for consecutive weeks, but the Manchester United loanee sat behind Kortney Hause and Tyrone Mings last weekend. It’s an impossible task to break-up a backline that is playing so well, but will we see James Chester or Tuanzebe reclaim the right centre-back spot opposite Mings?

I’d say that’s likely with Hause shifting to left-back.

But there is no rush, currently. Let the players get healthy, fit, and match sharp first, before electing any changes. Aston Villa have seven all-important league matches remaining and one of Bristol, Derby or Villa will be left out of the play-off race when the season ends.
