Portuguese sports paper Record writes both Sheffield Wednesday and Aston Villa are tracking 25-year-old French goalkeeper Quentin Beunardeau.

French goalkeeper Quentin Beunardeau is a wanted man per Record. The 25-year-old shot-stopper is said to be attracting interest from a pair of Ligue 1 clubs in Nice and Montpellier HSC, as well as EFL Championship clubs Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday (who Villa coincidentally play next weekend).

Beunardeau plays his football with C.D. Aves in Portugal’s top flight, Primeira Liga. Through matchday 27 the club sits in 12th, four points from safety. On the season, Beunardeau has featured in 20 of those league matches with a further two in cup matches. WhoScored grades him at an adequate 6.74.

Beunardeau began his youth career with Le Mans in France before moving to Nancy’s reserve sides. A loan move to Belgian side A.F.C. Tubize in 2015 solidified a permanent move thereafter, where Beunardeau made 60 appearances over a two-year span. With that, he made a summer move to a bigger club back in France – FC Metz. Last summer, he moved to Aves for an undisclosed sum.

Villa Verdict:

Currently, it’s but one report and probably nothing more than Villa doing their due diligence.

Still, Dean Smith might not be totally sold on any of his goalkeeping options. Jed Steer recently penned a one-year extension, but his physical stature limits his ceiling somewhat. Ørjan Nyland has two years running on his contract, but he failed to make a positive impact under the former manager (the torn achilles tendon hurts, too). Croatia No. 1 Lovre Kalinic was brought in for £7 million in January, but he’s suffered two knocks since then and hasn’t looked assured yet for club or country.

In reserve Aston Villa have Mark Bunn, who is out-of-contract at season’s end and 21-year-old Matija Sarkic. Beunardeau probably isn’t a future Villa shot-stopper, but the situation is at least worth tracking.
