With 17 league matches down, we’re just over a third of the way through the EFL Championship season. Let’s grade Aston Villa’s performers per position group.

It has been a mixed bag of results for Aston Villa Football Club. Recent results, however, sees the team trending upwards after six tumultuous, changing months. After a liquidity crisis in the summer, subsequent ownership change and mid-season coaching overhaul, things have finally begun to stabilize.

Dean Smith and his staff have Villa back into 11th-place in the EFL Championship on a +4 goal differential. Just four points separate the club from a playoff spot, and nine from the top.

There have been positives to the season (John McGinn and Axel Tuanzebe’s development into key starters) and negatives (underwhelming wing play relative to talent and awful defense under former manager Steve Bruce). With that said, let’s hand out out a position group report card through the one-third mark of the season.
