Aston Villa: John Terry hangs-up the boots for good
By Josh Tonti
2017/2018 Aston Villa captain John Terry calls it quits on a historic 20-year professional football career.
Former Chelsea, Aston Villa, and England captain John Terry has retired from professional football.
Per Wikipedia, Terry ends on an incredible 759 appearances across all club competitions, with an even-more incredible 68 goals from the centre-back position. Add in 78 England caps and Terry joins an elite club of longevity at the game’s highest levels. Some consider Terry to be the finest Premier League defender of all-time. Some consider him to be England’s best defender ever, full stop.
The merits and hardware stack-up enough to fill a mansion. Terry is a 5x Premier League winner, 5x FA Cup winner, 3x League Cup winner, and 2x Community Shield winner.
In Europe, Terry played a part in 1 UEFA Champions League title and 1 UEFA Europa League title. He’s a 4x PFA Team of the Year member and a 5x FIFPro World XI member. I could go on, but we all get it. He’s one of the best to ever play the centre-back position, and certainly one of the most decorated ever, regardless of position.
But we were lucky enough to have John Terry at Aston Villa. Not only that, but we were lucky enough to have him actually captain the club. Sometimes that gets lost on supporters, myself included. John Terry actually captained Aston Villa to a very good season. It didn’t end well, both for he and club; but it was memorable, and that’s something we can all think of fondly in the coming years.
Perhaps it’s not the last we see of Terry. There are rumors he could join the backroom staff of Aston Villa’s next manager.
Time will tell, but in any case, congratulations, John, on quite the career!
