Jack Grealish pens new five-year deal with Aston Villa Football Club
By Josh Tonti
Star midfielder Jack Grealish has penned a new, improved five-year contract with Aston Villa Football Club. The 23-year old is tied to the club through June 2023.
Christian Purslow’s second major act as Aston Villa Chief Executive has taken place. After weeks of rumors and behind-the-scenes soft promises, Jack Grealish has signed a new five-year deal with the claret and blue.
While a new deal doesn’t assure Grealish will be an Aston Villa player beyond this season, it certainly increases the chances. The midfielder’s previous contract was set to expire in 2019. Thus, Villa would be liable to cash-in on a cheaper rate. At the very worst, Grealish excels again and Aston Villa spark a bidding war should they fail to achieve promotion. Which, of course, is looking likelier every passing week under Steve Bruce.
The intricate terms of the deal were not announced, but it’s been said Grealish’s wages were doubled. It’s unknown if a hard release clause was inserted.
The goal, as it’s always been, is Grealish leading the club back under Premier League lights. Whether that happens or not remains to be seen. What I do know is that it will be next-to-impossible for Villa to keep its best player with a repeat season performance and no promotion. The club currently runs on losses outside the tolerance levels set forth by the English Football League over a three-year period.
After keeping everybody in the summer, as well as making some key additions, Villa’s squad is as expensive as ever. Should the club not comply come spring/summer 2019, Villa could be hit with a serious points deduction the following term.
That’s what makes ensuring Grealish’s long-term future at Aston Villa all the more important. It is an important early step for Christian Purslow as CEO of Aston Villa Football Club.
Congrats, Jack!
