It’s naive to think John Terry would fix all of Aston Villa’s problems

Thinking 37-year old John Terry can roll into Aston Villa and magically fix all defensive issues is naïve. That being said, his signing would be a huge morale and tactical boost.
John Terry continues to toy with the idea of returning to professional football. In an article with the Mail, Terry admits to having 3 or 4 offers to continue playing, as well as options in television and management.
Months after anchoring Aston Villa to the play-off final, Terry seems uncertain as to what’s next. It’s been reported in recent days that Steve Bruce is desperate for Terry to return in the claret and blue. The owners, NSWE, were equally reported as to have been cautious at first, but now ready to strike a deal with Terry’s representatives. Such a move, surely hastened with defensive woes, Jedinak’s continual struggles, and Elphick’s sudden departure on the 31st.
"“When we spoke in the summer, it wasn’t long after the season and I was still hurting. I loved my time at Aston Villa. I am still devastated that we didn’t go up. The manager, players and supporters were incredible with me but I hate losing and I feel there is unfinished business there. Steve Bruce is a great man and with the backing of the new owners, Steve will hopefully get the club back into the Premier League. Don’t get me wrong, if I don’t play again I am content with what has been an unbelievable career, but I’m still hungry to go and play if everything around it is right. If it’s right for me and my family.”"
Villa Verdict:
The thought of Terry returning is awesome on the surface, but not nearly as attractive when you break it down. Firstly, Terry is one year older, and no longer under the benefit of full pre-season training. Any prospective return, whenever that may be, could take upwards of three or more weeks before he is ready to feature. Moreover, it’s worth revisiting the fact that Terry was not nearly as effective following the recovery of his December 2017 foot fracture.
In fact, he was quite poor during Villa’s dry spells, including the play-off final itself.
That being said, however, he only needs to be better that what Villa have to be an upgrade. John’s extensive experience, ability to play left centre-back well, and relationship with James Chester are all appealing options for a club needing any possible defensive upgrade.
It’s worth noting Financial Fair Play remains a serious issue. The club has pushed off answering FFP concerns until early Spring 2019 and automatic promotion doesn’t look too good at the moment.
