After a disappointing draw with Ipswich Town at the weekend, Aston Villa face a critical inflection point midweek against high-flying Brentford.

Four games in and there could not possibly be a bigger discrepancy between Villa’s results and overall mood surrounding the club’s play-style. Quite frankly, the team has under-performed against inferior competition and got away with near-maximum points.

That won’t sustain itself, obviously, as natural regression takes its course and better opponents take advantage.

That’s what makes Brentford such a critical early inflection point in the season. Brentford, a highly-analytical club, have been playing exciting football under manager Dean Smith. So far in the campaign: The Bees hammered Rotherham 5-1, drew with Stoke at the Britannia, took care of business vs. Southend, and outclassed Sheffield Wednesday 2-0.

Led by an exciting, young front-line, Brentford look like real play-off contenders. Former Aston Villa transfer target Ollie Watkins and centre-forward Neal Maupay have three goals apiece for the two, 22-year olds. Oh, and did I mention both starting central defenders are 20-years old?

Brentford is certainly not afraid of the #PlayYourKids movement.

Bruce’s squad needs to impress in this game. Lose in embarrassing fashion? It will be Armageddon for Villa supporters, and rightfully so. Villa are playing at home on an extra day of rest and should throw down a performance worthy of merit for such a talented team.

Conversely, a convincing three pints will quiet down all the external noise…for a time.

It looks like Steve Bruce’s team will miss out on facing midfielder Ryan Woods. The Bees’ gifted playmaker is expected to depart Griffin Park on-loan with an option to buy. Stoke City are digging. Villa could rotate with Glenn Whelan entering midfield while Axel Tuanzebe shifts centrally.
